There are many fountains made with Mg.
You can use Mg in the place of Al.

Well, in fact you can substitute Al with anything, but it will all give other effects.
Fountains with Mg.. It is possible, but the Mg should be coarse. (Shavings etc..?)

Mg burns quite fast, so it's hard to create nice sparks with it when the Mg is too fine. (It will burn out before even leaving the fountain)
Tried regular meal with 10-20% Mg?

I have made two succesful fountains using the following composition:

80 Meal
5 KNO3
15 Mg

Magnesium should be coarse. I used magnesium that is used to form Grignard's reagent. The particle size is about 10-20 mesh. You could also use shavings or cut magnesium ribbon (expensive...). It resulted in long lasting brilliant white sparks, which flew about 6ft high. It was used in two small end-burning fountains with the following specs:

14mm ID
19mm OD
5mm Nozzle
100mm Length
