  1. HI all! I have another question for you! Reading AFN book I read some different contrasting things about rockets. On AFN II it is said that the nozzle is 1/4''(~ 1/3 I.D) with 5.5'' spindle lenght for 1 pound rocket. On AFN III it is said that the nozzle is 45-50%(~1/2 I.D) of tube for a generic rocket, which spindle lenght is 78% of motor. On website posted by sjeef1 it is said that nozzle is 1/3 I.D. Using http://www.flashnet.dk/rts/ the nozzle is 50% I.D.. So can someone tell me to make ''perfect'' rocket what is the best tooling design ? Using larger nozzle I should use hotter fuel right? or to reach highest height is better smaller nozzle with colder fuel or bigger nozzle with hotter fuel? Is reliable using(http://www.flashnet.dk/rts/) software? thanks to all. :) My tooling have this design:
    I.D 2cm
    spindle lenght 15,4 cm
    spindle width 1cm

  2. I belive the problem is the ignition because I made an electrical igniter using NC laquer with 75% BP. I tested it and it made a little BOOM, so i suppose it was too poweerfull. Is it possible? The diameter of the spindle is 1cm. I rammed the motor with increments of one teaspoon

  3. Hi guys! I had machined 1LB BP rocket tooling using ''pdfbq'' link. 2cm ID, spindle lenght 14cm. I've tested it using hotter 75 15 10 granulated BP without nozzle, ignited at the top of the core but the rocket CATO. Is the spindle too long? or is the BP too hot?
For UT tooling is too expensive to buy for me.This is the reason I have investigated for dimension.

  4. HI! Do you know steve laduke's universal rocket tooling? I have searched the dimension on the internet without any results! Do someone know the dimensions of 1LB rocket tooling?thx to all!!

  5. Thanks to all but I haven't perchlorate and silicon. the forumula that i've used is:

    Hardt Green Star #5
    Barium nitrate 56
    Red gum 7
    Magnalium -200 mesh 17
    PVC 15
    Dextrin 5
    with 25% alcohol / 75% water
but is safe to ballmill BP with MgAl together?

  6. thx!! I just tested my green MgAl stars..They are very very beautifull! The green is intensive but the only problem is to light the stars.. I tried to prime with BP without results(is too cold).. what kind of prime must I use? I don't want to use chlorate or perchlorate. A simple prime formula if is possible..

  7. sorry I was wrong... I want to do Hardt Green Star #5 with magnalium but this formula with magnesium :
    Lancaster Red
    Strontium nitrate 55
    Magnesium 28
    PVC 17
Must I coat magnesium in this formula?200mesh magnesium is useful for metal stars or it is better to use another mesh size?
    thanks

  8. hi all!!! I've read that magnesium must be coated with linseed oil or with potassium dichromate. How can I coat my magnesium with linseed oil? I want to do this stars having this formula

    Hardt Green Star #5
    Barium nitrate 56
    Red gum 7
    Magnalium -200 mesh 17
    PVC 15
    Dextrin 5
Can I use magnesium without coating because there is PVC?

  9. okkk!! I saw on pyroGuide how to make 3'' shell but i don't undestand the formula y=x+3/pi ( what is pi?) and why he use 3 strip pasting metod that correspond to multiply for 2 the layers to find effective layers? can you explain me this? ....another answer.... sorry ^_^ can I replace red gum with shellac in colored composition without problem?

this is the text from pyroguide:
This shell needed 10 layers of pasting (=20 effective layers) to complete. The diameter of the finished shell should be y=x*3/pi, where y is the diameter of the finished shell and x is the size of the mortar. So for this shell it should be 3*3/pi=2,86". Making it this diameter might take a lot of time for beginners, however it is not as problematic with small shells like this one. Making shells like the size of 6" or bigger will take a lot more of work. After the layers of pasting, let the shell dry completely.

  10. thx! Because I read on pyroGuide that for the 3'' shell are required 13 layers( posted charts)
Mortar size (inches): Actual Shell Size (inches): Paper weight: Number of wraps: Size of paper strips:

    3" 2-5/8" 30-40lb 13 3/4" wide x 4" long
    4" 3-3/4" 50-70lb 9 1" wide x 5-1/2" long
    5" 4-5/8" 60-70lb 10 1" wide x 7" long
    6" 5-9/16" 60-70lb 12 1.5" wide x 8-1/2" long
    8" 7-1/2" 70lb 14 1.5" wide x 11-1/2" long

What do you think about it? is correct?
For the size of mortar i don't know because i used 8.5cm inside diam. with 1 layers but the break is ugly and asymmetric.. I have supposed 9 cm internal diam..
What metod is the best to use for pasting?
